Halloween is just around the corner! As our students prepare to wear their costumes to school, we’d like to share a few guidelines to help ensure that everyone can celebrate safely and respectfully.
We know that students and staff alike are excited to dress up, and we encourage creative and fun costumes. However, it’s important that costume choices reflect our commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
- Students must be identifiable at all times.
- Masks are not permitted (they may be permitted during a costume walk in the school, but check with your school directly to make sure). Face makeup is allowed as long as the student remains easily recognizable.
- Scary clown costumes are not permitted.
- Costumes that depict violence, alcohol, or drugs are not appropriate.
- Fake weapons of any kind are not permitted.
- Costumes should not be provocative, sexual in nature or use inappropriate props.
- Costumes must allow students to move safely through the school and outdoor spaces.
Please keep in mind that even well-intentioned costumes can sometimes make others feel scared, upset, embarrassed, or excluded. As you choose a costume for school, we encourage you to reflect on the following guiding questions:
- Does the costume depict or reinforce a stereotype or stigma related to a particular race, culture, religion, or gender?
- Could the costume be considered offensive or disrespectful to any group or individual?
Thank you for helping us ensure that Halloween remains a fun, safe, and inclusive celebration for everyone!
