Active Routes to School

Get Moving: The Benefits of Active School Travel

Walking, biking, rolling or wheeling to school isn't just a way to get from A to B, it's an easy way for children and youth to stay healthy, happy, and connected to their community.

Children and youth (ages 5-17) should get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Currently, only 37.6% of Canadian children and youth meet this daily recommendation.

Why Active School Travel Matters

  • Builds lifelong healthy habits – Encourages students to choose active ways of getting around.
  • Boosts physical and brain health – Regular activity supports growth, learning, and concentration in class.

  • Supports mental and social wellbeing – Builds confidence, independence, and connection to the community.

  • Helps the planet – Fewer car trips mean cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
